I can only hope our military planners have carefully thought this out.  But again, the danger grows as we wait.

Saddam won't attack, because he knows the US could turn Baghdad into a cinder.

Are
you willing to bet your life on this?

Saddam seems very willing to let his own people suffer for his ambitions. Furthermore, he knows we will act with restraint, even if he does not. He seems to be gambling that the USA will never respond with our full capabilities.  And he is correct--the USA will avoid civilian casualties as much as possible.

I believe our "cowboy Bush" would not respond with nuclear weapons, even if for example Saddam attacks us with a chemical weapon in New York.  Even if he set off a nuclear bomb here, our first response would not be to kill lots of innocents in Baghdad.  Saddam knows this.  He does not seem to be afraid of us, even when we surround his country.  He seems very willing to take the chance.

Isn't this just a war for oil?

Absolutely not.  We did not take Iraq's oil in 1991.  After previous American victories in battle, we have always spent more rebuilding the country than we have benefited materially.  Germany after World War II is an obvious example of that. Many Americans find it insulting to suggest we have economic motives here. Furthermore, Hussein is likely to set fire to his own oil fields. Whatever happens, this war is certain to cost American taxpayers more than we gain from a financial viewpoint.
